Bill Mays (Judy Kirtley)

Bill Mays started piano lessons at the age of five. He grew up hearing traditional protestant hymns in the church of his preacher father and gospel music in black congregations of East Los Angeles. In 1959, when he was fifteen, he heard Earl Hines in concert, and a year later Miles Davis at the Blackhawk. His course was set.

Following the equivalent of a conservatory education at the US Navy Music School and a tour of duty as a Navy musician, he launched his professional jazz career in San Diego in 1965 and came under the influence of pianist Mike Wofford. In Los Angeles, he was encouraged by Jimmy Rowles, who helped him land a position as Sarah Vaughan’s accompanist. With the distinguished teacher Victor Aller, he intensified his study of the piano. Mays was soon playing with an array of L.A.’s best jazz artists, including Shelly Manne, Bud Shank and Art Pepper, and became a first-call studio musician.

Following his move to New York in 1984, he worked with Clark Terry, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Golson and the Mel Lewis Orchestra, among others. As the leader of his trio and a free lance soloist, he is in constant demand for recordings, club appearances, concerts and jazz educational events.
